Dr. Gouveia discusses how sciatica is diagnosed at treated at Health Fit Chiropractic
Your sciatic nerve runs from your lower back, through your pelvis, hip area and buttocks and down each leg.
When somethings wrong, the whole body feels it. Did you know, the term "sciatica" refers to pain that radiates along the path of this nerve?
Pain into the back of your leg (Sciatica) and your buttock is a sign that you are putting pressure on your nerve there. The most common cause of this nerve compression is a bulging or herniated disc in your low back.
The piriformis muscle is a deep muscle in your buttock and lies directly over the sciatic nerve. When this muscle tightens or spasms, it puts pressure directly on the sciatic nerve. When this muscle causes pressure on the nerve it can lead to leg symptoms.
There are other causes of sciatica that we might not think about. The little things like sitting on your wallet can cause pain due to pressure on the sciatic nerve.
Having dealt a lot with high-performance athletes and desk jockeys, our team of chiropractors are experts at finding the cause of sciatica and treating it using a variety of safe and effective methods.
Sciatic pain radiates from your lower (lumbar) spine to your buttock and down the back of your leg.
Those who struggle with sciatica often report the following feelings in their leg:
- muscle weakness
The pain from sciatica ranges from a mild ache to a sharp, burning sensation. It's like a jolt or electric shock or it can start gradually and intensify over time.
